Practical guide

Getting around and getting it right

Short answers to the questions readers ask us most before a first visit.

Getting around

How do I get from the airport to the centre?

Schiphol Airport is about twenty minutes from Amsterdam Central Station by direct train. Trains run frequently all day and most of the night.

Should I rent a bicycle?

If you are comfortable in traffic, yes. Amsterdam has excellent cycle paths, but keep to the right, use your bell and watch for trams. If you prefer, walking and trams work well.

How does public transport work?

Trams, buses, metro and ferries use the same contactless payment and travel cards. Tap in and out with a debit card or use a day ticket.

When to go

When is the best time to visit?

Late April to June for tulips and long days, or September for softer light and fewer crowds. Winter is cold but atmospheric.

What about the weather?

Expect changeable weather at any time of year. A light rain jacket and comfortable shoes are the essentials.

When are the museums busiest?

Weekends and school holidays. Book tickets in advance and arrive early on weekday mornings.

Food and drink

What should I try?

Stroopwafels warm from the stall, herring with onions, bitterballen with mustard, Dutch cheese and a slice of apple pie.

Is it necessary to tip?

Service is included. Rounding up the bill or adding a few euros for good service is customary but not required.

Is tap water safe?

Yes, it is clean and tastes good. Bring a refillable bottle.

Practical tips

Do I need cash?

Most places accept debit cards and phones, but some small shops accept only local cards. Carry a small amount of cash for markets.

Any tips for staying safe?

Watch for bicycles when crossing red pavements, keep an eye on your belongings in busy areas and lock your bike well.

Does everyone speak English?

Almost everyone does, but a friendly "dank je" (thank you) always gets a smile.
