De Wallen Area

The Red Light District

Amsterdam Streets at Night

Amsterdam’s Red Light District, locally known as De Wallen, is one of the oldest and most historic neighborhoods in the city, dating back to the 14th century. What began as a medieval port area evolved over centuries into a globally unique district where legalized adult services operate openly under Dutch regulation.

CRITICAL WINDOW RULES (No Photos!)

Absolutely no photography or filming of the workers in the windows is permitted. This rule is strictly enforced by local authorities, private security, and the community. Attempting to take a picture of a window will result in your device being confiscated, being confronted by security, and heavy fines. Put your phone away and keep it in your pocket.

Essential District Safety Tips:

  • Watch out for Pickpockets: De Wallen is crowded; keep bags zipped and wallets in front pockets.
  • Respect the Residents: People live here. Keep noise down and avoid shouting in the alleys.
  • Avoid Street Dealers: Never buy drugs or bike keys from street dealers; they sell fake substances.
  • Group Tours Limitations: Tours are heavily restricted. It is best to explore the district solo or in pairs.
The Green Culture

Amsterdam's Coffeeshops

Cozy Cafe interior

In the Netherlands, a "Coffeeshop" is an establishment licensed to sell cannabis products under the Dutch policy of tolerance (Gedoogbeleid). Do not confuse them with regular cafes (which serve coffee and pastries). Amsterdam boasts over 160 licensed coffeeshops, ranging from historic living-room-style lounges to futuristic cyberpunk dispensaries.

How to Order Respectfully

Always ask the budtender for the "Menu". Don't hesitate to ask questions about potency, strains, or effects. Budtenders are highly trained and prefer helping you find an appropriate dosage rather than dealing with a "white-out".

Understanding "Space Cakes"

Edibles take 1 to 2 hours to kick in. Never consume more if you don't feel immediate effects. Always ask the coffeeshop staff about the precise strength and start with a tiny slice.

Official Coffeeshop Regulations (Rules to Know):

  • Age Limit: You must be 18+ to enter. ID checks are mandatory for everyone. No exceptions.
  • Purchase Limit: Maximum purchase of 5 grams per person per day.
  • Alcohol & Tobacco Ban: Alcohol is not allowed. Smoking tobacco mixed with weed inside is banned under European smoke laws. Use pure herbal mixes provided.
Local Etiquette

How to Survive Amsterdam Like a Local

Amsterdam is a highly liberal, progressive, and welcoming city. However, visitors often make simple mistakes that annoy locals or put themselves in danger. Memorize these simple rules:

Beware the Red Bike Paths!

The red-colored lanes are exclusively for high-speed bicycle traffic. Walking on them is extremely dangerous and annoys Amsterdam cyclists. Always look both ways before stepping over them!

No Public Drinking

Drinking alcohol in public squares, streets, and outside coffeeshops is illegal and subject to on-the-spot police fines. Save the drinks for terraces and bars.

Keep the City Clean

Amsterdam takes environmental health seriously. Use public bins for trash and joint filters. Fines for littering are heavily enforced.

No Wild Peeing ("Wildplassen")

Peeing in the canals or streets is a major issue and causes architectural decay. Use the public urinals (Plaskruis) or bathrooms in establishments.
